The idea for the first I Love to Read Week in Vermont was created more than twenty-five years ago at a brainstorming session of Right to Read leaders one summer in Biddeford, Maine. For quite some time, I Love to Read Week was sponsored by the Vermont Department of Education. Three years ago, the Vermont Council on Reading decided to bring back officially this celebration of reading and writing for Vermont school children everywhere.
The Vermont Council on Reading executive board has gathered together some fun, and hopefully exciting ideas for you to use in creating your own classroom or school-wide celebration. There are no rules for your celebration other than promoting a love for both reading and writing. Gather together with friends and colleagues to put together your very own combination of events. We hope that you will find these ideas useful in your planning process. We also hope that if you find a good idea, that you will use the evaluation form found within to submit it for inclusion in next year’s publication.
Be sure to include the statewide
Sustained Silent Reading time on Thursday, February 13 from 1:30 –2:00
pm in your planning process! In this current time of mandated programs
and testing accountability, let’s
remind our communities of the importance of not only knowing how to
read but of also the importance of loving to read. What better way
to do that then spending thirty minutes reading together as a whole
school community! Children who love to read…choose to read!
